What Nicotine Level Should I vape ?

What are nicotine shots?

Nicotine shots are small 10ml bottles of pure, unflavoured nicotine. As it is illegal in the UK to sell nicotine in bottles bigger than 10ml, most companies make “shortfills”, which are 50 ml or 100ml bottles of flavoured liquid that people then add their nic shots too to give the liquid a nicotine strength. They are known as shortfills as the liquid isn’t filled all the way to the top, giving you room to add in the nicotine. Nicotine shots come in a variety of different strengths. The most common ones are 3mg, 6mg, 12mg and 18mg, but you may see this as 0.3%, 0.6%, 1.2% or 1.8%. What a lot of people don’t know that this strength is not the total number of mg in the whole bottle, but per ml, so 3mg of liquid in a 10ml bottle will actually be 30mg of nicotine.

What are Nic Salts?

Nic Salts are the exact same form of nicotine that are found in a cigarette; but don’t panic! It’s a very common misunderstanding that nicotine is one of the dangerous chemicals found in cigarettes, when actually it is the tobacco itself that carries all the toxins. The nicotine in Nic Salts is much better absorbed into the bloodstream, which can give off a better hit. A lot of people prefer to use Nic Salts as they give off a longer lasting hit which is practical for people who can’t vape frequently. They’re also better suited for those who smoke a pack or more a day. They are primarily available in 10mg or 20mg.

How much nicotine is best for me?

Deciding on the right amount of nicotine to vape is important. This can help you quit smoking for good and will ensure you have a better vaping experience. As there is no exact amount of nicotine in a real cigarette, trying to figure out what strengths you need can be a little confusing.

If you are a light smoker or a social smoker, and usually smoke around 10 or less a day, then most people will recommend you use 3mg or 6m. They are both relatively low-level nicotine strengths. This strength is also recommended for people who are coming to the end of their vaping journey and want to try and stop completely. Both of these strengths are a good place to start, and if you find them too weak, you can always get a higher strength.

If you typically smoke a pack a day, then 12mg will be a good place to start and will give you enough nicotine to keep the cravings away. If this is too intense for you, you can always reduce it.

If you are a really heavy smoker who smokes over a pack a day, then it is recommended you use 18mg. Again, you can always reduce down the amount of nicotine you are using if it is too intense or you are ready to start cutting down.

Are all nic shots suitable for any device?

No, not all devices are suitable for any strength. If you have a sub-ohm device this will be too powerful for a high dose of nicotine. When using a higher nicotine strength, you are better off using a vape pen or pod kit. If you are using a lower strength, you’ll be better off using a sub-ohm device or a box mod kit. If you are in doubt about what strength to start off with it is always best off to start lower. A lower strength could be all you need, and if not, you can work your way up. If you start off with a higher strength, it could put you off vaping.

Remember, stopping smoking is a process. It’s okay to start out with a higher strength if you need too!

What’s the standard advice?

Typically, smokers are asked how many cigarettes they smoke.

Someone smoking 10 cigarettes a day might be advised to use an e-liquid with a strength in the region of 1%, for example, while someone smoking 15-20 cigarettes a day might be advised to use 1.4%.

Recommendations like these are overly simplistic, and don’t work for many vapers.

What does research say about e-liquid and nicotine strength?

A study by Gentry et al is one of the few to examine the link between nicotine strength and switching to vaping.

The authors found that people starting with a low nicotine strength were more likely to relapse than those starting with a high nicotine strength.

Another study by JUUL Labs looked at the differences in success rates between North America and the UK.

Nicotine levels in e-liquid are significantly higher in the US, and the majority of the people in the study used the highest nicotine levels available.

After one, three and six months, the numbers of people successfully switching from smoking to vaping was significantly higher in North America than it was in the UK.

There’s an urgent need for more research in this area, especially as some people will discount the JUUL study because it is industry funded.

Still, the current conclusions are pointing in one direction. A higher nicotine strength means you are more likely to successfully switch to vaping.
